Carousel Twirl

circus sign circusIn tents of canvas cloth,

Under clouds of rolling grey,

Tickets sold at the entrance hall,

Billowing stilts,

Machinery clinking as it spins,

Lights and cameras,

Illuminating shadows,

On sorrowful faces of carnival folk,

Laughing and veering as the carousel twirls,

Lights glimmer in hope,

In greedy spoke,

Among the muddy puddles,

The mocking smiles of clowns,

Elephants thumping about,

Monkey’s thieving pockets full,

Tightrope walkers, balance still,

In tea leaves our worlds lay bare,

Gypsy woman,

Speaks in broken tongue,

Under the lights of the big top,

Step right up,

Get your carnival jeer.
