My 2016 News Years Resolution, is to publish a poetry book. I have most of the poems selected and I’m thinking a dark romance theme.

I have not published before. I’m thinking of self publishing through  Amazon and Createspace and finding a cover designer, to design my book cover.

Any suggestions, advice or ideas from my WordPress friends would be more then welcome!

Thanks Jen xxx

  1. there offering to help you self publish for a price. I paid such a company when I published my first book, “The First Time”. From recollection I paid approximately £500. All subsequent books have been self published without using a third party (other than paying for proof reading services and book cover design (the latter for my books “Dalliance” and “The Girl Who Wasn’t There”. In my experience it is worth paying for proof reading/editing and book cover design. I would, however recommend that authors think carefully before paying a self publishing company to do something which they, themselves can do perfectly well. Hope this helps. Kevin

      • There are guides on the Amazon site explaining how to self-publish (please give me a shout if you have problems finding them and I will send through a link). Basically all you need is a file in a suitable format (E.G. Microsoft or pdf) and you can upload it to the Amazon site. As regards proof reading, I ask my editor to check only for punctuation, typographical errors and formatting mistakes. Because poetry is such a personal thing I exclude from the remit textual changes as these are, in my view a matter for the poet. Kevin

      • You are welcome Jennifer. I agree, it can seem rather overwhelming which is, I think why so many people end up paying self publishing companies for services which they have no need to pay for. I haven’t used Createspace. However a friend of mine has and he found it worked well. Best. Kevin

  2. Reblogged this on georgeforfun and commented:
Wow, best wishes for success, Jennifer. quite a few published authors here on WP, stories and poetry. And even some have designed covers themselves. Hopefully they will reach out and offer good advice, I’d hate to have to blackmail them into it.

      • I love to see when people are willing to help others achieve success, if more people shared, the journeys would be so much more pleasant and enjoyable for all concerned. Not being a real writer, more of a story teller and avid reader, I’ve never thought of publishing anything other than a dissertation and that was only so I could graduate. As soon as I had the diploma, I bought out the rights for the schools’ press and made sure no copies would ever leave my control, especially since I later wanted to keep my security clearances and CCW permits……………………………. What kind of Marine would I be if they found out I liked wearing a Peter Pan costume? And thinking I could fly, gracious indeed. I’d have to keep looking over my shoulders and under my cape for those little guys in white coats and Velcro closured embedded jackets of multi-colors…………..
