Blackbird

A blackbird perched on a wire
wings in feathered plume
Frozen to twig and birch –
Lost in winter’s morn.
The sun rises over the mountain –
Colours gather and pleat
The canopy of trees in a line,
Shielding the glare – hiding the wallop of the wind
A squall beating down over the atmosphere
Turing dawn to day.
